Hammers: The wooden hammers are very light weight and thin. In cross-section they resemble spoons. The curved part that looks like the bowl of the spoon is the part that strikes the strings. At the other end there is a concave space that should rest over the edge of your index finger. Hold your hands out in front of you at elbow height. The palms should face one another with thumbs pointing up. Now curl your fingers in and back toward you body, and rest your thumbs on the edges of your index fingers. When playing, the hammers are held very gently between the thumb and the edge of the index fingers. Players do not hammer the strings so much as they raise and lower their forearms, allowing the hammers to drop under gravity and strike or bounce off the courses. The method is controlled but very subtle.
